Microsoft doesn’t intend on using Home

Game World Comments (0)

Well duh. Did you really think that Microsoft would seriously use Home to conduct virtual business meetings? It was a fun idea, but one that turns out to be false according to CVG. Microsoft says they “will not be using Home as a tool for virtual meetings. With fantastic Microsoft-developed products and applications like Live Meeting and even Xbox Live Party, we have everything we need to host a virtual meeting in-house

But on the other hand, if you were Microsoft would you admit to using a competitor’s product to conduct your business? Not only does it disparage your own products, but think of the intelligence gathering potential for Sony. We already know their moderators are invisible within Home. There could be one sitting in the corner of the meeting room, listening to every word.

As far as we know the other companies mentioned in the initial report are still planning on hosting these virtual meetings. Hope we haven’t put them off …

Actual gameplay screenshots of Final Fantasy XIII

Looks like the latest Famitsu has (shock!) actual gameplay screenshots of the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII. While we can’t host full scans of the magazine, FinalFantasy-XIII.net can. The real-time graphics look superb, and make us want to see the game in action. It’s only a few months until Japan gets a playable demo of the game — we’re certain to see much more of the game then.

MS predicts a Playstation 3 price cut ’soon’

With a 28 million Xbox 360 base and keeping a sales lead over the Playstation 3, Microsoft knows that the worldwide console price cuts they enacted in 2008 have been a key component to their strategy. Something that Sony has yet to do with PS3, which Microsoft exec Aaron Greenberg finds surprising.

“We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months,” Greenberg told Edge. “We’re frankly surprised it’s taken this long… I would expect they’d have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure.” Color us surprised as well.

Continuing into 2009, Microsoft is well aware that Sony will become more aggressive in their PS3 pricing which, truth be told, is still an expensive piece of hardware for the casual market. Greenberg is right though, it’s truly odd to see Sony staying firm on their pricing structure, especially with how things are playing out in the industry.

Columbia movies back on Netflix instant view

Game World Comments (0)

Keen-eyed observers (or at least one keen-eyed observer, anyway) over at 360Sync have noticed that movies from Sony’s Columbia Pictures are once again available for Netflix streaming on Xbox 360. After the titles were first yanked from the service in November, we later reported that most of the Columbia movies had returned, but it seems that now all of them are available once again. Just to be sure, we decided to see if our beloved Paprika had returned. Lo and behold, it has! Now go and add some movies to your queue! Do it because it’s more fun than working.

Come February, Gamestop will shun Xbox trades

Game World Comments (0)

If you’ve been thinking about unloading your old Xbox games or even your big black box at Gamestop in hopes of getting some coinage, you best be getting to it soon. We just learned that effective February 9th, Gamestop will no longer be accepting original Xbox hardware, accessories or games for trade-in cash. Then again, is the $1.45 they pay for each Xbox game really worth it?

Yakuza 3-themed PS3 looks stylish

A brand new PS3 bundle will go on sale in Japan, featuring the upcoming PS3-exclusive Yakuza 3. Available in late February, the bundle will include the game and a specially designed Ceramic White console (pictured, above). Only 10,000 units of this bundle will be made, so expect it to sell out quickly in Japan. Will any find their way on eBay? Perhaps.

November ‘08 sales decline blamed on 40GB’s successful ‘07 introduction

Game World Comments (0)

Filed under:

Talking to CNET, Sony has revealed why the PS3’s November sales were actually lower in 2008 than in 2007, despite an upward trend for other consoles across the board. It seems that the introduction of the 40GB model and a new lower price in November 2007 was too successful, meaning that the PS3 was unable to compete with itself even a year later. What Sony forgot to mention is that the cheapest Xbox 360 is currently selling for half the cheapest PS3’s price.

Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Price cut equals more sales. Maybe if Sony had done the same thing in 2008 the PS3 would have outsold its own year-old ghost (that’s a racing game metaphor, not a Christmas Carol “Ghost of Christmas Past” one). Microsoft’s Aaron Greenburg says in the same CNET post that the company’s internal figures suggest that the Xbox 360 now has an 8 million unit lead on the PS3 worldwide, with 28 million 360s and 20 million PS3s in the wild.

Until the December NPD numbers appear we won’t know the true truth, but it’s fair to assume he 360 outsold the PS3 by a decent margin. Hopefully we’ll see a price drop soon, so that more people can get hold of a PS3 without having to take out a second mortgage.

Microsoft expects PS3 price cut soon, while Reeves reiterates profit mantra

Game World Comments (0)

Filed under:

This time, it’s not an analyst that’s predicting a PS3 price drop. It’s the competition. Microsoft’s outspoken Aaron Greenberg has been celebrating the tremendous success of Xbox 360, which currently leads PS3 by more than 8 million units worldwide. Obviously, part of the 360’s success comes from its competitive price. In America, the cheapest 360 is half the price of the cheapest PS3. However, Greenberg doesn’t believe the price difference to be as substantial in the future. “We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months. We’re frankly surprised it’s taken this long. … I would expect they’d have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure.”

Certainly, a lower priced PS3 would have helped the install base during an economically depressed holiday season. However, SCEE’s Reeves said very frankly on the PlayStation site that “the most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money. This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve.”

With the cost of manufacturing a PS3 plummeting, it won’t be long until PS3 units can be sold at a profit. “Once we have achieved this, I think it will be a very exciting time for PlayStation. Once we have alleviated that specific pressure, we can move forward at a rate of knots,” Reeves promised.
